NYC Worker Falls Ten Stories To His Death

A construction worker fell ten stories to his death, landing on scaffolding on the first floor of a luxury hotel in Manhattan on Wednesday. According to officials, it appears the worker was not wearing a harness as required.

Authorities say the worker, 18, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival. His name has been withheld pending family notification.

The city Buildings Department has issued a stop work order while they investigate the accident. The contractor is permitted to perform remedial work to secure the site while the investigation is ongoing.

There have been two construction-related fatalities so far in 2009, compared to 12 by the same time last year, said the Buildings Department.

There have reportedly been 19 complaints to the Buildings Department about the work site over the past two years, and several of the complaints concerned allegations of unsafe working conditions. All of the complaints were resolved.
