Two Children Killed in Tragic Car Accident on New York Highway

A tragic car accident claimed the lives of a brother and sister when the vehicle they were traveling in crashed with a tractor-trailer truck, in rural Western New York.

The mother and driver, 48, of Bergen, was driving on a straight stretch of highway on Route 262, at about 10:15 a.m., when she turned into the path of a tractor-trailer, according to the Genesee County Sheriff's Department. The accident occurred 25 miles east of Rochester

A sheriff at the scene confirmed the deaths of two young children in the accident - a girl, 7, and a boy, 11.

The mother was listed in stable condition at a hospital in Batavia.

Brooklyn Man Charged with Hit and Run

A Brooklyn man was arrested, on Sunday, for an October 6 car accident that killed one man and seriously injured another near the Belt Parkway.

The man, 19, was arrested and charged with manslaughter, according to police. The accident occurred at 4 a.m., on October 6, when he was driving east on the parkway and his car swerved off the roadside onto a grassy area and struck two pedestrians.

He told detectives that his car had been stolen, but he was charged when a detective was able to identify him from an image caught on a nearby surveillance camera at the same time of the crash, police said.

Woman Injured in Car Crash Off Pier Dies

A woman who was seriously injured when her car crashed off a pier earlier this week died on Friday, January 11. Margrit Mueller, 68, had been in critical condition and was unconscious since her accident on Monday, January 7.

Mueller and her passenger, Ellen Halvorsen, went off a Bay Shore pier and the car landed upside down in freezing cold water.

Two Good Samaritans who heard the crash jumped into the water and were able to pull Mueller from the submerged car. But Halvorsen remained trapped underwater for at least 20 minutes before she was freed by police and emergency workers. Halvorsen, who lived alone in an apartment above a land surveyor's office in Bay Shore, died shortly after the accident.

Both of the women suffered cardiac arrest, but the medical examiner has not released the official causes of their deaths.

New York City Woman Dies in Car Crash

A 32-year-old woman from New York City was killed in a car accident on a Pennslyvania highway. The accident happened on Wednesday, one of the busiest travel days of the year. The driver of the car, also from New York City was injured in the crash. His condition is unknown.

A westbound car collided with an eastbound tractor-trailer about 9:30 a.m. after the car crossed a grassy median near the New Jersey border, police said. The truck, which carried bags of cement, jackknifed on its passenger side across both eastbound lanes, closing them for six hours.

The driver of the truck was not hurt in the crash. A second car was involved in the accident. No one in that car was injured. The accident shut down eastbound Interstate 78 for a good part of the day. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The police are still investigating the accident.

An Oil Tanker Crashed Into a Light House Off Staten Island

On Saturday, November 3 an oil tanker crashed a lighthouse off the coast of Staten Island. The tanker, Axel Spirit, slammed into the light house tower at around 2 a.m. The tanker damaged the tower's legs, so the tower's light is no longer rotating and is not considered reliable. The light is still working though.

No injuries were found aboard the tanker and no pollution of oil was reported. The incident occurred during the remains of Hurricane Noel which caused 5 foot waves and 25-knot winds.

The shipping lanes are still open, but the Coast Guard are asking ships to stay away from Ambrose Light until it is repaired. As of now the Coast Guard has set up temporary navigation until everything is fixed.

There are other navigation aids in the area, "but it's very important that all of the mariners out there know about this one so they don't come too close to it," said Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Annie Berlin.

Tractor-Trailer Falls off New York Expressway

A semi-truck fell from an elevated highway in New York City and came to rest on a car. The car accident happened on the Staten Island Expressway. A 61-year-old woman and her 1-year-old granddaughter were in the car. Neither was injured in the accident. The woman driving the car described the incident to reporters.

"I see the truck coming down on me," she said. "If I kept going, he would have ended up on top of my car."
The rig's huge tires came to a rest on the hood of Christopherson's car. The body of the tractor-trailer came to a rest almost straight-up, cab-first, its back-end leaning against the elevated highway.

The driver of the truck had to be extracted from the cab of the truck. He suffered mulitple broken bones. He was taken to Richmond University Medical Center for treatment. He is listed in stable condition. It is unknown why his truck drove off the roadway. The accident is being investigated.

Bicyclist Killed in New York

A bicyclist was killed after going for a ride in Dutchess County, New York. The 49-year-old victim was struck by a car. The driver is a 54-year-old-man from Rhinebeck. The bicycle accident happened on Saturday afternoon in Clinton Corners.

Deputies say the car was making a left turn when it struck the bicyclist, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident remains under investigation.

Drunk Driver Runs Over 3, Critically Injures Toddler

A women who was driving home after drinking a bottle of vodka hit a 3 year-old girl, her grandmother, and her great-grandmother. The women did not bother to stop until someone informed her there was a stroller being dragged under her car.

The toddler and the two women were crossing a street in Queens when they were hit Saturday, August 4. Mia Tetelman, the toddler, has broken ribs and bruising to her lungs; authorities said she was in critical condition on Sunday. The grandmother, Aviva Govoshovitz, suffered from bruises and cuts, and the great-grandmother, Frida Shein, received a broken rib and a black eye.

The driver, Susan E. Karnabe, did not return to the scene of the crime even after she learned that she had hit three people and had the stroller removed from under her car. Karnabe went home, which is where police eventually tracked her down.

She admitted to having drank a bottle of vodka before she got into her car. When police tested her blood alcohol level they found that it was above the legal limit and tested at 0.094.

Karnabe told police she started drinking at 2 p.m. Saturday and downed a bottle of vodka, prosecutors said. She said that as she drove home from her son's house she hit something and heard people screaming, then noticed damage to her car when she got home at 3 p.m., they said.

Karnabe was held on Sunday for charges of drunken driving, vehicular assault, reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a child, and leaving the scene of the crime.

Teenager Dies in New York Car Accident

An 18-year-old teenage girl from Camden, New York was killed in a car accident in Nelson over the weekend. She was the only person in her car. The SUV that hit her had three people in it. The victim was visiting friends in the area.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Pleasant Valley Road and Route 20 in Nelson after the victim failed to stop at a stop sign. Her vehicle was hit broadside and she died at the scene.

All of the people in the SUV were taken to a local hospital to be treated for their injuries. The victim had hoped to attend Mt. Holyoke College.

I-90 Closed by Truck Accident

A truck accident on the I-90 closed the freeway on Wednesday morning. A tractor trailer rolled over at the Northway exit. The truck's load spilled all over the freeway.

The accident happened just after 7 a.m. as a tractor trailer loaded with 54,000 pounds of construction material was traveling west on I-90. That's when another car crossed into its lane.
"The most serious contributing factor to this accident was the unsafe actions of the passenger car," said Sgt. James Allendorph of the State Police. "We're unable at this time to identify the owner or operator of that passenger car that caused the accident."

The police are investigating the accident and trying to locate the driver and car. If you have any information please contact the New York State Police.
