Spinach Recalled Due To Salmonella Contamination

Two brands of bunched spinach have been recalled by Ippolito International, of Salinas, after salmonella was detected during routine testing, reports the AP.

The voluntary recall involves 1,715 cartons of spinach harvested from September 1-3, and sold to wholesale buyers, foodservice and retailers, according to the California Department of Health.

The majority of recalled cartons were sold under the “Queen Victoria” and "Tubby" label. The spinach was shipped to twelve states including Florida, New Jersey and New York.

To this date, there have been no reports of illness associated with the recall.

Symptoms of salmonella infection include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. They generally appear within 12 hours to 72 hours of eating tainted food. Infants, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are more likely than others to develop severe illness.

Salmonella Prompts Recall Of Green Onions

Several thousand cases of green onions provided by a farm in Mexicali, Mexico have been recalled due to fears that the onions may be contaminated with salmonella.

The bacteria was found during routine testing in New York last month, according to inspectors with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. To this date, there have been no reports of illness.

Officials notified the shipper, Salinas-based Steinbeck Country Produce. The company issued a voluntary recall Aug. 28 for 3,360 cartons.

The recalled produce was distributed in the following states: Arizona, California, Kansas, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New York and Texas.

Ocean Mist Farms also recalled several hundred cases after discovering they were from the same lot. The company wouldn’t say where its onions were distributed.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole

Soy Bean Sprouts Recalled For Possible Listeria Contamination

Soy Bean Sprouts have been recalled by Chang Farms because of a possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The recalled products include 10 lb bags (bulk) of soy sprouts and 12 oz. plastic bags (retail) of soy sprouts, labeled under the Chang Farm Brand and have a “Sell-By” date of July 17, 2009.

The affected products were distributed to wholesalers and retail stores throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York.

To date, there have been no reports of illness associated with the recalled Soy Sprouts.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause symptoms that appear similar to flu and may include headache, stiffness, a high fever, and nausea.

This type of bacterial contamination is particularly dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, and adults with weakened immune systems.

In May, Bean and Soy sprouts produced at Chang Farms were also recalled for Listeria.

In 2008, twelve people died of food poisoning linked to tainted deli meats produced at a plant owned by Maple Leaf Foods, according to Canadian health officials.

Consumer Information: For questions regarding the recalled products, consumers can contact the Chang Farm at (413) 665-3341 or (413) 222-5519. Consumers that fear they may be experiencing illness symptoms should contact their medical doctor.

Beef Products Recalled For Possible E. Coli Contamination

JBS-Swift Beef Co., announced a beef recall this week after an investigation found 18 people were sickened with E. coli O157:H7 illnesses that may be linked to the tainted meat, according to the U.S. Agriculture Department.

Today the company announced they are expanding the recall to include 380,000 lbs of assorted beef products boosting the total to more than 421,000 lbs.

The recalled beef products were produced on April 21-22 and distributed both nationally and internationally.

The recalled products are generally used for steaks and roasts rather than ground beef. However some of the beef may have been processed into ground products by other companies.

E.coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacteria that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and, in severe cases, kidney failure. The very young, seniors and persons with weak immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness.

Consumers with questions can call 1-800-685-6328.

For a complete list of the recalled beef products, read the USDA News Release.

Nestle Toll House prepackaged, refrigerated cookie dough was also recalled this week due to the risk of contamination with E. coli.

Queso Fresco, Fresh Cheese Recalled For Listeria Contamination

The New York State Agriculture Department warns consumers not to consume certain “Queso Fresco, Fresh Cheese,” made by Peregrina Cheese Corp. of Brooklynn, New York, due to a possible Listeria contamination.

To date, the Department has not received any reports of illness associated with the recalled cheese products.

The recalled products in question come in 14 ounce packages, wrapped in foil with a date code of 4461. All packages with this code are affected.

A routine sample of the cheese, taken by the Department’s Division of Milk Control and Dairy Services on January 26, 2009, was subsequently tested by the New York State Food Laboratory and found to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. On February 3, 2009, the manufacturer was notified and the company voluntarily recalled the product.

Listeria monocytogene is a member of the Listeria family. It is often found in soil, dust, mud, vegetation, silage, and sewage. Unlike other bacteria associated with foodborne illnesses, Listeria can grow in cold, refrigerated environments.

An estmated 1,859 become ill with Listeriosis every year in the United States. On average, 425 people die from the condition.
