FDA Requests Seizure of PETCO Animal Food Products

U.S. Marshals, at the request of The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), seized Petco animal food products that the company allegedly stored in unsanitary conditions at its supply distribution center in Joliet, Illinois.

During inspections in April widespread bird and rodent infestation was found, according to the FDA. During a follow up investigation in May, the infestation was still present and ongoing.

The seized products were subject potential to contamination and in violation of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.

"We simply will not allow a company to store foods under filthy and unsanitary conditions that occur as a direct result of the company's failure to adequately control and prevent pests in its facility," Margaret O'K. Glavin, associate commissioner for regulatory affairs, said in a statement. "Consumers expect that such safeguards will be in place not only for human food, but for pet food as well."

The distribution center supplies pet food products and supplies to PETCO stores located in 16 states: Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.

The FDA has not received any reports of pet illness or death, but consumers are advised to wash their hands with soap and water thoroughly after dealing with the dog food.

If consumers are concerned that their dog may have consumed a tainted product or they are displaying any symptoms of illness, owners should contact their veterinarian immediately.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole

General Motors Recalls 200,000 Vehicles for Fire Hazard

General Motors Corp. announced an automobile recall of more than 207,000 Buick Regals and Pontiac Grand Prix sedans warning consumers not to park them in garages or other enclosed structures due to a fire hazard.

The company has received reports of 267 vehicle fires and six injuries, five of them minor and one moderate. And 17 fires in structures.

The recalled vehicles include: 1997-2003 Buick Regal GS and Grand Prix GDP models with 3.8 liter supercharged V6 engines.

Fires may be caused by drops of engine oil being deposited on the exhaust manifold through hard braking, warns the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

A fire can start if the oil gets hot enough, NHTSA warned. The safety agency said that if the exhaust manifold is hot enough and the oil gets below a heat shield, "it may ignite into a small flame and in some cases fire may spread to the plastic spark plug wire channel."

General Motors is alerting consumers of the recall by mail. Driving the vehicles is safe, but they are unsafe to be parked in garages or enclosed structures until the fire hazard is eliminated.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole

Recalled Beef Served in New York City Schools

A massive recall involving 143 million pounds of beef is affecting the New York City Public School System. The recalled beef was obtained through the National School Lunch Program and served in school cafeterias.

News of a "hold" on beef prompted the New Yory City's Department of Education to "take it upon ourselves as a precaution to stop serving hamburgers," a spokesperson for the department said in an e-mail. This meat, part of the National School Lunch Program, has been removed from schools and destroyed, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture statement.

SchoolFood, a branch of the DOE, received notice of the recall Sunday. Beef from Hallmark/Westland is provided free of cost to the schools by the USDA, and makes up about 25 percent of the beef served in New York City public school cafeterias.

The beef was recalled after video was released by the Humane Society showing workers at the Hallmark/Westland slaughterhouse forcing cows that could not walk to move. Those cows should not have entered the food supply. Company officials are trying to assure the public that the risk is low from consuming the meat, but there is an increased risk of mad cow disease in cow's that cannot walk. It is believed most of the beef in the recall has already been eaten. There have been no reports of illness from the recalled beef.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann
