Cruise Ship Accident Injures More Than a Dozen Passengers

By now, most people have heard about the Crown Princess cruise ship accident that occurred off the coast of Port Canaveral yesterday. Orlando's Local6.com provides first-hand accounts from passengers aboard the ship when it developed steering problems and rolled to one side.

Among the more chilling tales recounting the experience was New Jersey resident Dan France:

"When I was running down through the hallways, there was water cascading down the stairs. When we felt it happen, the ship started to tilt all the way to one side. All of the furniture and everything moved from one end of the room. My wife and mother-in-law's chairs slid into the railing and they held on for dear life."

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Staff Writer

Doctor Sues Hospital for Slip and Fall

With all the insurance industry's tort reform propaganda on the airwaves today, one might think that lawyers are the only ones bringing any malpractice or negligence lawsuits today. Doctor Loomis, a neurosurgeon, had surgery privileges at St. Mary's Medical Center. When he was visiting patients in the hospital, he stopped in the pantry to get a cup of coffee, as physicians often did. He slipped and fell on a wet spot on the floor, injuring his hip and left arm. Besides suffering pain in his leg, his arm has become mostly useless, making it impossible to perform surgery.

Loomis sold his medical practice and sued the hospital for failing to maintain the floor in a reasonably safe condition. The jury awarded him $17 million for loss of income, pain and suffering, and medical expenses. The hospital appealed.

St. Mary's Medical Center of Evansville, Inc. v. Loomis, 783 N.E.2d 274 (Ct. App. Ind., 2002)

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jeremy Thurman

Treating Fractures (Broken Bones)

Many accidents and injuries discussed on these pages result in fractures, or broken bones. It is important to know how to react if you are ever needed to treat a fracture while waiting for professional help to arrive. The Mayo Clinic offers some great advice when it comes to treatment and precautions, including how to stop bleeding, how to immobilize the area with splints and how to treat for shock if the injured person shows signs.

Read all their advice on broken bones

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Staff Writer
