Each Year 43,000 Children Are Injured In Bathtub Slips and Falls

A new study published in the journal Pediatrics confirms slips and falls are the most common source of bath injuries.

According to the study, more than 43,000 children are injured each year in the U.S. in slip and falls in bathtubs.

The researchers looked at some 791,200 bathtub- and shower-related injuries in children aged 18 and younger treated in emergency departments between 1990 and 2007. Most of the injuries occurred in toddlers, around two years of age.

Data from the study showed the most common injuries were cuts to the face resulting from a slip, trip or fall, followed by the head and neck injuries.

This is the first bathtub and shower related injury study conducted in the U.S. using nationally available data collected by the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System of the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Researchers concluded, higher product safety standards, particularly increased friction on bathtub and shower floors, is needed. They also suggested shatterproof shower doors and elimination of sharp edges in bathing environments should be evaluated.

CDC - Pet-Related Falls Injure Thousands Each Year

The leading cause of nonfatal injuries in the U.S. is falls, but until now few data has been published regarding falls associated with pets.

In the latest edition of MWMR by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports more than 86,000 falls a year are attributed to four-legged family members. Of those injuries, 88 percent were associated with dogs, not cats.

The most common causes of pet-related injuries are chasing pets, tripping on pet toys and walking dogs.

“While there are many benefits to owning a pet, they can also be a hazard,” said Judy Stevens, a CDC epidemiologist who co-authored the study.

The report was based on emergency room reports from 66 hospitals during a five year period from 2001 through 2006. Overall, three out of every 10,000 falls involves a pet or pet-related item. The highest rates of injuries occurred in individuals 75 or older and the most common injury was a hip fracture.

An estimated ten percent of falls are serious and led to internal injuries or broken bones. Some of which required hospitalization.

The CDC recommends properly training pets to not walk in front of you or to pull on the leash. And choosing smaller dogs that may be easier to control.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole

Man Arrested After Staging Slip and Fall In Western NY

A 46-year-old western New York man who pretended to slip and fall at a local store has been charged with insurance fraud.

The man claims he was injured when he tripped and fell over a rug at a grocery store in Jamestown on July 24th, according to authorities. He was taken to the hospital and treated for an alleged back injury. He then submitted an insurance claim to the Farm Fresh market’s insurance company.

After viewing surveillance footage, investigators later discovered that he had laid down on the floor after adjusting the rug to make it appear as if he had tripped and fell.

When authorities informed him of the video, he withdrew his claim. Authorities arrested him last month and also charged him with attempted petit larceny for submitting an $860 ambulance bill to the store for payment.

He faces up to a year in prison, if convicted. #

Jury Hands Down Defense Verdict in Slip and Fall Trial

A Madison County jury handed down a defense verdict after deliberating for less than two hours in a two-day slip and fall trial.

The lawsuit, filed in November 2006, against Richard Minton, alleged a woman injured her left ankle on February 18, 2006, at her Alton Rental home owned by Minton. The suit claims she was exiting the property when she stepped into a hole that was located in the common lawn area, causing her to fracture her ankle.

She alleged Minton was negligent by failing to provide her a good, safe and proper place to walk on the premises, failed to provide a proper means of ingress and egress to and from the property, failed to inspect the property and failed to warn her that there was a dangerous condition on the premises.

Minton told the jury it was her, not himself that was negligent in the case. She was careless by failing to properly lookout in the area she was walking and she failed to notice the hole which could easily be detected by the human eye.

The jury agreed and returned a verdict in favor of Minton.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole
