Long Island Father of Two Dies in Hit and Run Motorcycle Crash

Nassau police continue to search for a hit and run driver that killed a motorcyclist in Franklin Square on Sunday morning.

John Deike, 46, was driving his Honda motorcycle northbound on Commonwealth Street at about 11:45 a.m. when a car traveling eastbound on Naple Avenue broadsided him at the intersection. The driver of the car fled the scene.

The 46-year-old father of two small children was only six houses away from his Franklin Square home where his family eagerly awaited his arrival to go see the Radio City Christmas Show in Manhattan. No one witnessed the accident, but a neighbor heard the collision down the street and notified Deiker’s wife, Christine.

Police arrived at the scene to find Deiker lying in the middle of the street, his motorcycle down and debris scattered in the roadway. Deiker had not been wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Emergency personnel transported him to Franklin General Hospital, where he died from his injuries about an hour after the accident.

Police have determined, from the debris at the scene, that the hit and run driver’s vehicle is a 1991-1996 Buick Century.

Deiker’s parents said his wife Christine, 4-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter were inconsolable.

"At this point we are endeavoring to locate the individual who possibly struck Mr. Dieker. We're attempting to identity the vehicle," said Det. Sgt. John DiMartinis of the Nassau Homicide Squad.

Franklin Funeral Home, Inc. of Franklin Square, NY is entrusted with the funeral arrangements for John Deiker. Visitation Tuesday 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass Wednesday 10:30 a.m. at St. Catherine of Sienna R.C. Church. Interment St. Charles Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Deiker family for their children's college fund.

Three Killed In NYC Motorcycle Crashes

Three people were killed in New York City motorcycle accidents on Thursday.

A motorcyclist, 22, of the Bronx, was killed when his bike struck a vehicle at an intersection in Queens, according to police. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His unidentified passenger died upon arrival at the hopsital.

The investigation is ongoing.

In an unrelated accident the same night, an unidentified male motorcyclist, 32, was thrown from his bike after losing control and hitting two vehicles.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Two Motorcyclists Injured After Crashing Into Deputy Car

A motorcycle accident has two motorcyclists recovering after colliding with the same sheriff’s department patrol vehicle, according to 911 dispatchers.

The collisions occurred on Monday at 7:30 p.m. on a hill along Brinkerhoff Road (Route 173) in Chittenango, just 10 miles east of Syracuse.

According to officials, a woman driving a motorcycle struck a Madison County Sheriff’s Department patrol car. Another motorcyclist trailing behind her also hit the deputy’s car.

Both motorcyclists were treated for non-life threatening injuries at a Syracuse hospital. The deputy was not injured. It was not reported as to whether or not the motorcyclists were wearing the proper safety attire at the time of the crash.

The investigation is ongoing as officials work to determine the cause of the crash.

Retired New York Trooper Killed In Motorcycle Accident

A retired New York State trooper was killed in a motorcycle accident on Friday.

Robert Binns, 52, was driving on Union Road near William Street in Cheektowaga when he was struck by another vehicle turning into a nearby gas station.

He died of injuries sustained after he was thrown several feet, according to Cheektowaga Police Captain John A. Glascott.

Jeffrey Kolacki, was driving the vehicle that struck Binns, Glascott said.

Kolacki has been cited with failure to yield the right of way.

More than 2,200 people are killed and more than 55,000 are injured in motorcycle accidents, each year. According to recent reports, nearly 80% of motorcycle accidents result in death (compared to 20% of motor vehicle accidents).

Motorcyclist Killed In Brooklyn Accident

Two people were injured and a motorcyclist was killed in Brooklyn last night, according to police.

The motorcycle accident occurred at the intersection of Barbey Street in East New York, when the motorcyclist, traveling east on Pitkin Avenue, collided with a Dodge Intrepid – causing the Dodge to then crash into a lamppost.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the hospital. He was an off-duty police offer, according to NY1 sources.

The other driver and a passenger were transported to the hospital with back, head and leg injuries.

Madison County Man Killed In Motorcycle Accident

A Madison County man, 21, was killed in a motorcycle accident on Sunday, after he crashed into a truck.

The man was riding his off-road Yamaha motorcyle on his property in Hubbardsville when he drove into the road and struck an oncoming jeep, according to sheriff’s deputies.

He was taken to the hospital, where he died shortly after.

The truck driver suffered minor injuries in the crash.

NHSTA statistics released in September show the number of motorcycle riders or passengers killed on U.S. roads in 2007 increased 6.6 percent over 2006, while the overall number of traffic fatalities fell below the lowest numbers since 1994.

In October, the AMA urged DOT to fast track a long-overdue federal study into the causes of motorcycle crashes.

Man Killed In Cayuga County Motorcycle Accident

A motorcycle accident claimed the life of a Cayuga man and seriously injured his passenger, in Montezuma on Friday night, according to Cayuga County Sherriff's Office.

The motorcyclist and his passenger were traveling west on State Route 90 when he lost control of the bike. The driver of the motorcycle, R. Spano, 50, was air lifted to University Hospital. Hours later he died from the injuries sustained in the crash.

The passenger, D. Bennett, 47, was transported to University Hospital by ambulance. She is listed in stable condition.

No further information is available at this time. The accident is being investigated by Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.

Father Killed In Motorcycle Accident On Grand Island Bridge

A motorcycle accident on the Grand Island Bridge claimed the life of a 32-year-old motorcyclist on his way to work.

When crossing the bridge toward Niagara Falls, the motorcyclist failed to notice a van was broken down in the road. Behind the van was a red pickup truck. The motorcyclist noticed too late that the pickup truck ahead of him had slowed down, according to New York State Police.

The man hit the pickup truck on the driver side. The motorcycle and operator of the bike went airborne, landing on the bridge deck in the left lane beneath a tractor trailer.

The motorcyclist did not survive. No one else was injured. Officials are unsure why he didn’t see the hazard in front of him.

A trust fund has been set up to help the three young children who lost their father in the motorcycle crash. Donations can be made to the Zbock Family Trust through the Next Financial Group, 6631 Main St., Williamsville, NY 1422.

AMA Urges DOT to Move Forward With Motorcycle Crash Study

The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) called for the U.S. Department of Transportation to fast track a long-overdue federal study into the causes of motorcycle crashes.

More than 10 million motorcyclists are traveling the roads today, more than any time in America’s history, said Rob Dingman, AMA President and CEO. “As a result of this growth and increased usage, we are experiencing more motorcycle fatalities, crashes and injuries."

NHSTA statistics released in September show the number of motorcycle riders or passengers killed on U.S. roads in 2007 increased 6.6 percent over 2006, while the overall number of traffic fatalities fell below the lowest numbers since 1994.

"Some time ago, Congress and the motorcycling community committed the necessary funds for this study," said Dingman. "For too long, NHTSA has simply focused on a strategy of advocating mandatory helmet use, while doing little to prevent crashes from occurring in the first place. With a new administration set to take office on January 20, we can't afford any more delays while motorcycle crashes, injuries and fatalities continue to mount. The time to begin the study is now."

The study will be conducted by the Oklahoma Transportation Center, an independent and well-respected research facility at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. The last major motorcycle crash study was completed in 1980.

Teen Killed in Motorcycle Accident in New York

A seventeen-year-old Long Island student was killed in a motorcycle accident on Thursday night. Grief counselors were present to console classmates.

Benjamin had been a student at Riverhead High School until his tragic death on Thursday night, according to school officials.

The teen, from Wading River, was riding his motorcycle west on Route 25A when he crashed with a car that was leaving a parking lot and struck an oncoming sports utility vehicle.

The other drivers were not injured in the accident. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

The motorcycle and both vehicles were impounded by police for safety checks.

190 people were killed annually in motorcycle accidents in New York, according to the latest statistics available from 2006.
