Twelve firefighters were injured Saturday morning when two FDNY fire trucks collided, overturning one truck and trapping men inside the wreckage.
Officials said the accident occurred about 9:43 a.m. when a truck from Engine Company 236 collided with a truck from Ladder Company 107 as the two rigs traveled on Ashford Street between New Lots and Hegeman Avenues in East New York. One truck overturned, trapping firefighters who had to be extricated by emergency workers. More than two hours later, a firefighter gave a thumbs-up to the cheering crowd as rescue workers pulled him from the Ladder 107 truck where he had been pinned.
A Fire Department spokesperson said four men were seriously hurt, while eight had less serious injuries. They transported the injured to three area hospitals, Kings County Hospital Center, Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center and Jamaica Hospital Medical Center.
Engine Company 236 and Ladder Company 107 Station Houses are about a mile from each other and within a mile-and-a-half of the crash site.
The accident is under investigation and police released no details at this time. The streets were slick from rain, which may have played a role in the accident. It was unclear whether the wreck occurred as the trucks responded to an emergency call.
