Simplicity Bassinets Recalled; Two Infant Deaths Reported

Simplicity Bassinets will no longer be sold by six major retailers, mainly Wal-Mart, after the deaths of two infants. They said they will be providing a store credit or refund to consumers who purchased the bassinets at one of their stores.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) urges caregivers and parents to stop using the bassinets immediately.
The CPSC is issuing a warning because SPFA Inc., whom purchased Simplicity Inc. in April 2008, is not cooperating with the agency and refuses to issue a recall. The company alleges they are not responsible for products manufactured by the company prior to their takeover. For this reason, the CPSC asks all parents to share the news with friends, family, caregivers and preschools.
The agency was able to use newly granted authority to release a consumer warning although the company has not cooperated. Further action may be taken to force the company to recall the products.
Included in the recall are Simplicity 3-in-1 and Simplicity 4-in-1 Convertible Close Sleeper model bassients. Model numbers can be located on the underside of the bassinet. A full list of recalled model numbers is listed below. A full list of RECALLED model numbers can be found on Consumer Affairs.
A faulty frame on the 4-in-1 Simplicity Bassinet crushed and suffocated two infants according to a police report and family members. The 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 convertible bassinets have a removable flap that separates a side railing and the bed. Babies can slip through the space between the railing and the mattress.
The most recent death occurred last week when a little girl’s head became caught when she slipped between the mattress and side railing after the mattress came loose from the frame.
More than a million Simplicity cribs were recalled for the same reason from May 2005 to September 2007 in four separate recalls, after four children died and countless others were injured when they were trapped between the mattress and the railing.
