The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers not to consume Nestle Toll House prepackaged, refrigerated cookie dough.

The company has voluntarily recalled all varieties of Nestle refrigerated cookie dough products due to the risk of contamination with E. coli 0157:H7, a bacterium that causes food borne illness.

According to the agency, a preliminary investigation reveals a “strong association” between consuming the cookie dough and the illnesses of at least 65 people in 29 states.

The cookie dough packaging warns consumers not to eat raw dough. Nestle Toll House cookies made from refrigerated dough are safe to consume when baked as directed.

Consumers that have these products should not eat them and instead return them to their local supermarket for a full refund.

For more information, consumers can contact Nestlé Consumer Services at 1-800-559-5025 and/or visit their Web site at www.verybestbaking.com.

E. coli contamination is a dangerous bacterium which can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and kidney failure, especially in young children, the elderly, and those with weak immune systems.

The company is maintaining a complete listing of all Nestle recalled products.
