U.S. Marshals, at the request of The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), seized Petco animal food products that the company allegedly stored in unsanitary conditions at its supply distribution center in Joliet, Illinois.

During inspections in April widespread bird and rodent infestation was found, according to the FDA. During a follow up investigation in May, the infestation was still present and ongoing.

The seized products were subject potential to contamination and in violation of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.

"We simply will not allow a company to store foods under filthy and unsanitary conditions that occur as a direct result of the company's failure to adequately control and prevent pests in its facility," Margaret O'K. Glavin, associate commissioner for regulatory affairs, said in a statement. "Consumers expect that such safeguards will be in place not only for human food, but for pet food as well."
The distribution center supplies pet food products and supplies to PETCO stores located in 16 states: Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.

The FDA has not received any reports of pet illness or death, but consumers are advised to wash their hands with soap and water thoroughly after dealing with the dog food.

If consumers are concerned that their dog may have consumed a tainted product or they are displaying any symptoms of illness, owners should contact their veterinarian immediately.
