Staten Island Man Killed In Crash; Driver Arrested

The driver of a vehicle responsible for killing a Staten Island man in a single-car accident on Tuesday has been arrested.

The accident happened on West Shore Expressway near the Staten Island Expressway Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, the vehicle struck a guardrail, ejecting the 56-year-old passenger from the vehicle. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver, 48, also of Staten Island, was arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated.

The two men worked together, said police.

In 2006, an estimated 17,602 people died in alcohol-related traffic accidents – an average of one every 30 minutes. These deaths account for 41 percent of the 42,642 total traffic fatalities. Of those, nearly 13,470 involved a driver with an illegal BAC of .08 or greater.
